If you’ve ever felt like something deep within you is shifting—like you’re no longer content with the way things are—it might be because you’re going through a spiritual awakening. I remember the exact moment it started for me. It wasn’t this blissful, peaceful experience that some people describe. Nope, it hit me like a storm, shaking up everything I thought I knew about myself, my life, and the world around me. Looking back, I realize it was one of the most transformative and meaningful experiences I’ve ever had, but in the middle of it? It felt like everything was falling apart.
So, what does it really mean to have a spiritual awakening? Let me share what it was like for me and what I’ve learned along the way.
What Is a Spiritual Awakening?
For me, a spiritual awakening is when you start seeing life differently—like you’ve been asleep your whole life and suddenly, you wake up to a new reality. The day-to-day grind, the things society tells us are important—money, success, appearances—start to feel a bit shallow. I found myself asking deeper questions. Why am I here? What is my true purpose? Is there more to this life than just what I see?
It’s not that you find all the answers right away, but you start questioning. Everything. And that’s where the magic (and chaos) begins.
My Awakening Journey: A Complete Shake-Up
When my awakening started, I wasn’t prepared. It didn’t come in the form of a peaceful realization or an “aha” moment. It came more like a tornado ripping through my life. Suddenly, things that used to feel stable no longer did. I started questioning my career, relationships, my goals—everything that once made sense now felt… off.
I won’t sugarcoat it—there were moments when I felt completely lost. It’s like being thrown into the deep end without knowing how to swim. I questioned my sanity at times, wondering why I couldn’t just be content like I used to be. But the deeper I went into this process, the more I realized that it was my soul waking up, urging me to shed the old and make space for something new.
Signs You Might Be Going Through a Spiritual Awakening
I know I’m not alone in this journey, and if you’ve been feeling some of these same things, you might be going through your own awakening. Here are some signs I experienced:
1. Heightened Awareness – I started noticing signs and synchronicities everywhere. You know those moments that feel too perfect to be a coincidence? Yeah, those. The universe felt like it was speaking to me in ways I hadn’t noticed before.
2. Questioning Everything – Suddenly, the things I used to care about didn’t feel important anymore. I found myself questioning the very foundations of my life—my beliefs, my goals, even my relationships.
3. Emotional Ups and Downs – There were days when I felt so connected to everything, like I was in flow with the universe. And then there were days where I felt completely overwhelmed and lost. The emotional rollercoaster is real.
4. Feeling Disconnected – I went through a phase where I felt disconnected from people around me, even those I loved. It wasn’t that I didn’t care, but I felt like I was changing, and not everyone around me was on the same path.
5. Craving Inner Peace – I started seeking out practices that helped me find peace within. Meditation, journaling, and spending time in nature became my go-to ways to calm the noise and reconnect with myself.
6. A Deeper Sense of Purpose – Above all, I felt this pull towards something greater. Even when I didn’t know exactly what it was, I knew I was being guided toward a more meaningful life.
The Dark Night of the Soul: The Tough Part
I’d be lying if I said this journey was all sunshine and rainbows. One of the hardest parts of my awakening was what many call the “Dark Night of the Soul.” It’s that phase where everything feels like it’s falling apart, and you’re left feeling vulnerable, lost, and unsure of what’s next.
During this time, I had to confront parts of myself I didn’t even know existed—old wounds, fears, and limiting beliefs. It was painful. But looking back, I now realize that this phase was necessary. It was like the universe was forcing me to peel back the layers I had built up over the years—the layers of protection, ego, and false identities. This was the moment where I had to face my shadow and deal with all the parts of myself I had been avoiding.
The Dark Night of the Soul is uncomfortable, but it’s where real transformation happens. It’s in that discomfort, in those moments of feeling lost and broken, that we shed the old and make room for the new. For me, it was the breakdown before the breakthrough.
How I Got Through It
Navigating a spiritual awakening isn’t easy, but there are a few things that helped me find my way through the chaos:
• Surrender – I had to learn to let go. I stopped resisting what was happening and allowed myself to flow with the changes. It’s easier said than done, but the more I trusted the process, the more clarity and peace I found.
• Self-Compassion – There were days when I didn’t feel very “spiritual” at all—days when I was frustrated, scared, and questioning everything. I had to remind myself that it’s okay to not have all the answers. Awakening is a process, not a destination.
• Daily Practice – Having a daily routine helped me stay grounded. Whether it was meditation, journaling, or even just spending time outside, these practices reminded me to tune in to my inner guidance and connect with something greater than myself.
• Support – I couldn’t have done this alone. Finding a community of like-minded people or talking to mentors who understood the journey was invaluable. When you’re going through something so personal and transformative, it helps to know you’re not alone.
The Other Side of Awakening: A New Perspective
As difficult as the journey was, I can honestly say that my spiritual awakening has been one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. I came out of it with a deeper understanding of who I am and what truly matters to me. I’ve learned to listen to my intuition, trust in the timing of the universe, and live more authentically.
Life after awakening isn’t about being “enlightened” or perfect. It’s about embracing the messiness of the human experience while staying connected to something greater. It’s about knowing that you’re part of something infinite and trusting that everything—even the hard stuff—happens for a reason.
Embrace the Journey: Trust the Process of Awakening
If you’re going through your own spiritual awakening, I want you to know that it’s okay to feel lost. It’s okay to not have all the answers. This journey isn’t about reaching some final destination, but about continually evolving and deepening your connection with yourself and the universe.
Things might feel chaotic, confusing, or even painful at times, but trust that it’s all part of the process. You’re shedding the old to make room for the new. And on the other side, there’s a version of you that’s more aligned, more authentic, and more connected to your true purpose.
So, breathe through it, be kind to yourself, and trust that the universe has your back—even when it feels like everything is falling apart. You’re waking up, and it’s going to be worth it.
